🔴 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™️ out now ⚠️ @iucnsossaveourspecies #SpeciesActionNow
As bushfires still rage in Australia, the International Union for Conservation of Nature issued a report today on the dramatic status of eucalypts species.
Of the 826 eucalypts existing worldwide, more than 98% occur only in Australia, according to today’s update of the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species TM.
Whilst all known eucalypt species worldwide have now been assessed, almost 25% of them are threatened with extinction.
Elsewhere in the world eucalypts can be highly invasive, but in their native range in Australia they face threats from human use of land, especially agriculture and urbanisation. Since ecosystems are by definition a biological community of interacting organisms, the dramatic decline in eucalypts population has led to a dramatic decline in Koalas. Eucalypts are the sole food source for the Koala. Recently, 300 species conservation experts at the IUCN issued an urgent call to the world’s governments and the private sector to massively scale up species conservation action in response to the escalating biodiversity crisis.
